POSTPONED UNTIL 2023! Clay (but Casual): Chill handbuilding sessions on Tuesday nights 5-8pm

Snakebird Designs

Regular price $150.00

POSTPONED until 2023- may return in a fresh new format!

Looking for an opportunity to work on your hand building projects, ask lots of questions and meet likeminded creatives? This is for you!

This option is for those with a bit of ceramics experience who could use the extra space and equipment. BYO materials if you like (clay, glazes, tools etc.) or borrow/purchase what you need.

Consumables like clay and slips/underglazes can be purchased as needed on the night and paid for at the end of the session (or three sessions if using a pass) via invoice. See pricing information below.

Up to 12 people can attend per session- first in, best dressed.

Available to borrow for free during the sessions are:

- Boards for wedging clay and for working on pots

- Handbuilding tools like sponges, wooden tools, needle tools, carving tools, hole makers, shavers, bevels, rulers, cookie cutters, stamps, rolling pins, letter/number stamps

- Glazing tools: various paintbrushes, glaze tongs, wax resist, underglaze pencil

- Slab roller: consistent thickness slabs have never been so easy

- Hand extruder: create long noodles of varying thickness and shapes (perfect for coil pots and handles! Clay must be very soft.)

- Tile cutter

- Loads of bench space

- Slips/underglazes: over 30 colours to decorate your greenware

- A fancy banding wheel (if I'm not using it)

- Nice ambience- good tunes, and kitchenette facilities

Tuesday nights at Coburg Studios. Come from 5-8pm (no worries if you're late- it's not that kind of formal class!) There's no obligation to come consecutive weeks, though you can store your pots if you book in a 3 session pass. See session dates at top of page.

Upstairs at Coburg Studios- 69 Charles St, Coburg North (right by the velodrome).

How to book in:

Email hello@snakebirddesigns with your name and the session(s) you'd like to attend as the subject line. Once this has been confirmed, purchase your single session or three session pass here.

Who's it for?

Anybody who has mucked around with clay recently- in an introductory handbuilding class or even just using a clay kit in lockdown. Experienced potters are equally welcome to enjoy the social atmosphere and use the facilities.

If you aren't really sure what you're doing, I'd recommend coming to a Built by Hand introductory class first so that you get a comprehensive run down of techniques.

Because this is not a traditional, structured class, the suggested cost is much lower. I will be working on my own projects at the time but am happy to answer questions that come up! If you find a session particularly informative or valuable, consider choosing a payment option that reflects the value to you.

Pricing information:

Choose your own payment tier- you can add additional compensation if you felt you got a lot of value from the session.

Self Directed : This is for self directed potters who have the occasional question but are mostly happy to use the equipment and work on their projects unassisted. This helps cover the rent for the space and pay your teacher for her time, expertise and investment in materials for you to use.

Beginner: This tier is for those who have not had much more experience than an introductory workshop. If you have lots of questions and need a little extra help, this tier is recommended! Your funds will pay your teacher for the extra time and energy spent assisting you on your pottery journey!

Supporter of the Arts: This tier is for generous souls and those with more financial flexibility. Your funds will pay your teacher an above-award wage for her time spent studying ceramics and teaching others, and helps pay-it-forward for others with less financial freedoms.

Budget: This tier is for those of us with a little less financial flexibility. This will help cover the rent for the space, and will not quite pay for your teacher's time. If choosing this option, help setting up or cleaning is a great addition!

Available to purchase as needed:

- Stoneware clay: tan, speckled or smooth white ($5 per kilo)

- Pre-portioned slips, underglazes and glazes ($5 per small tub)

- Dipping glazes ($10 per kilo of work). Make use of my stoneware glazes (clear, shino, dust storm and fawn), pay per kilo of bisqued pots.

- Firing (per kilo) $9 per firing- bisque or stoneware temps.

Parking: There is free and unrestricted parking at Coles down the road or on Lens street next to the studio.

If you have purchased a 3 session pass and cannot attend due to reasonable unforeseen circumstances, you can return the following week as catch up for no extra cost- email to let me know before the session (as early as possible please!)

After two postponements of this nature, you will need to purchase additional single session passes, to make up for time setting up etc.
