Small group try the wheel workshop

Snakebird Designs

Regular price $175.00

Always wanted to try the potter's wheel?

Now's the perfect time! This is the perfect no-pressure environment to get your hands dirty and experience the joy (and challenge) of throwing on the potter's wheel.

Across a two and a half hour session in a private space in Coburg Studios, you will learn about the process of pottery making, from clay preparation to firing. The classes are for three students only, to ensure that everyone gets the attention they need and can ask lots of questions!

The session will start with a safety briefing and chat about the process, followed by a quick demonstration of throwing a pot on the wheel. You will then get to jump on the wheel yourself and get stuck into centering clay, pulling the walls and shaping your very own ceramic pieces!

To maximise your time on the wheel, the clay will be prepared for you. Due to the slow nature of the pottery process, your pieces will be trimmed and glazed by me after the session.*

You’ll choose up to 3 items to keep and pick which glaze you would like used on them. They will be fired and ready for collection approximately one month after the session.

Who is this class for?

  • This workshop is for absolute beginners, so you don’t need to have any experience!
  • throwing on the wheel is quite a challenge and making LOTS of mistakes is an integral part of the process. Things can (and should!) go wrong, so students with a positive attitude will have the best time- if you are a perfectionist or want something less fast paced, perhaps handbuilding  will be more your speed!
  • These classes are designed for adults and may be too fast paced for some  young people. Please reach out to Sarah at hello@snakebirddesigns.com to discuss- a private booking could be a great option to ensure that young students can get some extra assistance.

What do I need to do to prepare?

  • When slinging clay on the wheel things are bound to get messy. Please wear closed-in shoes, no tight-fitting clothing and nothing you are scared to get dirty (clay washes out but it's best not to take chances).
  • Please bring a towel.
  • Long nails and pottery don't mix! Please make sure yours are trimmed short for the session.

Why learn with Snakebird?

  • Receive personalised tuition from a teacher who is patient, enthusiastic and knows what it’s like to be a beginner.
  • Keep the unique objects that you made with your very own hands!
  • Guaranteed good tunes (several hours have gone into curating the perfect pottery playlist).
  • Immortalise your 'Ghost' moment with a photo of you on the wheel.

Wonderful and relaxing experience

We really enjoyed the 'try the wheel workshop' with Sarah. She is a very warm, patient and encouraging instructor, who made us feel welcome and at ease. She shared her professional skills and we learned a lot. The studio is a little oasis, and we feel the same sense of calm when we use or look at the pieces we brought home (which Sarah expertly dried, trimmed, fired and glazed for us). They are really beautiful and we feel proud of ourselves. We are hoping to return for a term course.

I finally get it! I think...

I have been to other beginner pottery wheel workshops in the past and have found them to be too rushed and I've walked away without really grasping the techniques. Whereas Sarah's workshop was the perfect pace, informative and fun. I felt at ease with Sarah's teaching style.
