Built by Hand is a three hour introductory class where you'll learn the fundamentals of creating with clay from your experienced and enthusiastic teacher, Sarah (from Snakebird Designs.)
In a calming environment and small class (between 6-12 students), you will be given the skills needed to create and decorate your very own functional ceramics!
Snack on some pastries and fruits and enjoy a tea or coffee while you first learn about the process and principles of ceramics.
You will then be taken through various handbuilding techniques (slabs, pinching, joining and coils), and then encouraged to mix and match them to bring your creative vision to life. Bring your inspiration or be guided through the making process of small pinched bowls and a larger item like a mug or small plant pot.
Toward the end of the class you will have the opportunity to personalise and decorate your pots using slips and underglazes.
When you're done for the day, your pieces will be left to dry and then bisque fired, glazed and fired again. They will be ready to collect within four-six weeks (you will receive an email/text to arrange pickup.)
Please note that the class will only run if 6 or more people book in. If there aren't enough bookings, you will be contacted and refunded the day before the class.
Cancellations- If you are no longer able to attend, please get in touch up to one week before the class date and your spot can be transferred to a later date. Unfortunately cancellations within a week of the date will not be refunded- perhaps ask around and see if a friend or family member can take your place.

Who's it for?
Anybody who wants to enjoy the benefits of playing with clay.
Absolute beginners are warmly welcomed!
If you're wanting to bring a younger potter-to-be, please email beforehand to check if the class will be suitable for their age.
If you have already done a handbuilding class in recent times, you might prefer the less formal Clay (but Casual) sessions on Tuesday nights which are less structured and offer more flexibility for payment.

- If you have any accessibility requirements or injuries to be aware of, please email me ahead of time via hello@snakebirddesigns.com and I'll try my best to accommodate.
- Let me know of any dietary requirements- we'll be having snacks!
- Please consider cutting your nails short- they tend to get in the way.
On the day:
Clothing: comfort is king! Don't wear your finest threads- clay does wash out but it's best not to take chances.
Parking: There is free and unrestricted parking at Coles down the road or on Lens street next to the studio.
